What does a Venus retrograde in the natal chart mean?
Retrograde planets indicate that the energy of the planet is expressed internally rather than externally. It usually takes more time to learn to integrate and work with that planet.
Venus goes retrograde once every 18 months for about 40 days or six weeks. This time is linked with in reversals in relationships, breakups, people coming back into your life. Retrograde planets are associated with the past.
If you have a natal Venus retrograde, you question your loveability and relationships tend to be difficult for you. You are often shy and reserved.
If a planet is retrograde, it means that it is seemingly moving backward. In a horoscope, this is often signified by a small R letter next to the planet, short for retrograde. Sometimes it is denoted by Rx. It’s perfectly normal to have several retrograde planets in your birth chart, so no worries if you see even 4-5 of them. All planets can be retrograde except for the Sun and the Moon (which are not planets, they are just referred to as such in astrology for the sake of simplicity).
In karmic astrology, retrograde planets are linked with unsuccessful integration of the energy of the planet in question. If you are interested in the topic of retrograde planets and karmic astrology, you might enjoy Martin Schulman’s book, Karmic Astrology, Vol. II: Retrogrades and Reincarnation.
Retrograde Venus in the Natal Chart
A retrograde Venus in the natal chart suggests blockages related to your self-esteem, feeling of worthiness, relationships, finances. You are insecure and question yourself a lot. This placement very often indicates self-rejection. Social anxiety is also fairly common. In younger years, you often feel as though you were inherently less worthy than your peers.
If you have a retrograde Venus in your birth chart, you have a different idea of love than most. You are more self-conscious about your relationships than most people. You often wonder why you would be anyone’s first choice. Forming deep bonds is difficult. Friendships and romantic relationships are both challenging. People with this placement often feel lonely for longer periods in their life, it can be quite excruciating. Your best relationships tend to come later.
If you believe in karma, in karmic astrology a retrograde Venus in the natal chart is linked to relationship trauma in past life. According to it, the soul wants to take a break from relationships in this lifetime so that it can grow a bit on its own first. This placement can also indicate karmic relationships/marriage.
While this placement is definitely challenging, it’s good to know that its effect is in most cases not forever. When your progressed Venus turns direct, there’s usually an improvement in your love life. Similarly, if you have a natal direct Venus that turned retrograde shortly after you were born, during the time your progressed Venus is retrograde you may recognize yourself in the description of a natal retrograde Venus. Progressed planets forming a positive aspect to your natal Venus can also have a similarly helpful, beneficial effect, so don’t lose hope.

Meaning of Venus in Astrology
Venus is one of the inner planets. It is the second planet from the Sun, with an orbital period of 225 days. It is the second brightest object in the night sky after the Moon. Humanity has known about its existence since its earliest days.
Venus is just as important in astrology. This planet governs attraction, beauty, art, grace, relationships, diplomacy. It also governs money and values. Venus is the planet of balance and harmony. It adds a touch of beauty to life and in short, it makes it worth living.
In the Zodiac, Venus rules two signs: Taurus (nocturnal Venus) and Libra (diurnal Venus). Because it moves quickly through the Zodiac, the sign of Venus matters as much as its house placement and aspects in the birth chart.
Venus in the birth chart tells what you value, how you give and receive affection, and how you attract people (and good things in general) into your life. Venus rules money in addition, and it’s one of the planets that have to do with your finances.
