Too many people believe that everything must be pleasurable in life. -Robert Greene
Capricorn is the sign that knows how to utilize resources to the best. As an earth sign, it’s no surprise that it is oriented on the here and now of the physical world rather than on emotions or chatting. They want to get work done. And they don’t just want it, they actually get work done.
Capricorn is one of the most capable zodiac signs in astrology. Capricorn is a hard worker, dedicated to its job and achieving its goals in general. It’s not a coincidence that so many successful business(wo)men and sports(wo)men have this sign emphasized in their charts.
If you are reading this article, you are probably familiar with Capricorn on some level.
Some Technical Data on Capricorn in Astrology
Following the fiery visions of Sagittarius, Capricorn knows how to turn vision into reality. Named after the Mountain Goat, Capricorn’s glyph looks like the horn and tail of a mountain goat.
Capricorn is the tenth sign of the Zodiac, and it is connected to the tenth house of the natural chart,. This is the house of career, profession, and public image. To become an expert in your field, you have to work hard and keep learning for a long-long time. Saturn and Capricorn are about structure and discipline. (Saturn even rules the bones in the human body that gives us structure.)
The planetary ruler of Capricorn, Saturn is not known as a lighthearted planet. Saturn represents restrictions, limits, hard work, persistence, time and old age in astrology. It is associated with a hostile environment, but Saturn can teach you how to survive and cope with the toughest challenges. Those born under the Goat instinctively know how.
Capricorn is a winter sign, its season takes off on the 22nd of December, just before Christmas time. It lasts until the 19th of January, when Aquarius is just about to start.
Element and Modality of Capricorn in Astrology
Capricorn is the cardinal earth sign of the Zodiac, a unique combination of taking action and doing the hard work that follows. Let’s analyze the element and mode of this sign on a deeper level.
- Element: Capricorn is an earth sign. Earth signs (Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn) are focused on the physical world. As a winter sign, Capricorn knows how hard it is to stay alive when there are no fruits on the trees and it’s freezing. Perhaps this is the reason why this sign is so frugal and practical. Capricorn is super hard-working and famous for its persistence.
- Modality: Capricorn is a cardinal sign by modality. The other three cardinal signs are Aries, Cancer, and Libra. These guys and girls are super ambitious and active. As they govern the change of the seasons, it’s no wonder that cardinal signs are initiatory and they enjoy making changes. They are brave, enthusiastic and ardent.
- Polarity: Capricorn is a feminine or passive sign in astrology.
What Makes Capricorn Strong in Your Natal Chart
A sign has great influence over you if you have your Sun, Moon, ascendant or several planets there. It’s interesting that around 1990, several outer planets were in Capricorn. If you were born around that time (aka you are a Milennial), Capricorn automatically becomes an important sign for you. During this period, Saturn, Neptune and Uranus were ALL in Capricorn. Add the personal planets like the Sun, Mercury and Venus if you were born in a winter month and you get a super Capricornian person.
But how do you know if Capricorn is emphasized in your chart?
First of all, if you were born between the 22nd of December and January 19th, you are a Capricorn Sun. In this case, you are a true Capricorn. If your Sun is in tenth house, you share some (quite a few) traits with your Sun in Capricorn friends. If your Sun is conjunct Saturn in your chart (or in any aspect with it, the tighter the orb, the more powerful the effect), you often mistake yourself for a Cappy.
The ascendant is super important in a birth chart. This is the most personal point of the chart, as it changes every four minutes. If you are so lucky that you are a Capricorn rising, you come across as a Capricorn, nevertheless your Sun sign. Until someone gets to you know better, they’ll think that you are a child of Saturn. Which you are, in some form.
Moon. Your emotions, moods, habits. The Moon isn’t really cut out for cold and reserved Capricorn, but if it happens to be in this chart, you’ll cope with emotions in a rational way. The Moon is in detriment here, so people who have this placement are often insecure or melancholic.
Finally, if you have several planets in Capricorn or in your tenth house, this sign is still important for you. Again, the generation born around 1990 feels the effects of Capricorn on many levels, as they have a stellium there.
Why We Love Capricorns?
There are so many good traits to Capricorn, in astrology it’s impossible to describe them all here. Actually, there should be a book with the title An Ode to Capricorn, Capricorns Are the Best, or something similar. Nevertheless, let’s give it a try and collect a few lovely Capricorn characteristics.
(I have to ask for your forgiveness, dear Capricorns. I must admit that I’m not one of you, so this isn’t as perfect as if it was written by a Capricorn. But I hope you appreciate my efforts.)
Capricorn, Powerful and a High Achiever
Ruled by the Celestial Taskmaster (aka Saturn), Capricorns are often labeled as workaholic. This sign is full of ambition. They respect hierarchy and they easily climb the ladder with their diligence and persistence.
Capricorn are surrounded by an aura of cautiousness. This sign is skeptical bit their skepticism turns into straightforward negativity every now and then. It doesn’t rush into anything. On the contrary, they are extremely conservative and think about it twice before making a decision. Capricorn doesn’t like risks.
Saturn rules the past and everything old in astrology. Capricorns love traditions, and at the same time, they are skeptical towards new things. There can be present a fear of bad reputation which is a driving force. If they haven’t learned to cope with this fear, Capricorns might do and accomplish things to please people around them rather because they find it important to do so.
Consistency Beats Everything
Capricorn is ruled by Saturn, the planet of restriction and obstacles. Dealing with limitations is something you have to do on a daily basis. In this world, perfection doesn’t exist. No matter how perfect the plan seems, there are always unforeseen hurdles to overcome on the journey. This is something Capricorn knows, and unlike Aries, they won’t give up when things don’t work out for the first time. This sign keeps going until they get what they wanted and the combination of hard work and persistence makes Capricorn people invincible.
You need ideas and you need to have a vision. But everyone who has ever tried to turn an idea into reality knows that knowing where you want to go is just the first step. Getting there takes a lot of effort. In the Zodiac, every sign corrects the weaknesses of the preceding sign. Following Sagittarius, a fire sign full of vision but lacking follow-through, those born under the Goat are here to execute.
What Do You Mean When You Say I’m Too Cold?
Saturnian energy is rigid and cold, no matter what. These qualities are reflected in Capricorn personalities, too. They are serious, businesslike and cautious, which traits are awesome and handy in the workplace, but they don’t overlap with the description of fun. For a Capricorn, one of the hardest things in life is to let go and just enjoy life.
If the Goat is your sign, you were born to be an authority person, a boss who worked up her way there.
However, there are things in life other than work. The polarity of Capricorn is warm and nurturing Cancer, the sign of family and home. Don’t get me wrong, most Capricorns love their family and want to be there for them. It’s just they sometimes act in domineering manner even at home.
Capricorn in Love
Capricorn is a quite oldschool sign in all aspects of life. This is true when it comes to love, too. They need time to commit, but once they do, they are extremely loyal You can count on them in any situation. Actually, many Capricorns will stay n a relationship even if it doesn’t work anymore.
Capricorns are after a stable long-term relationship. Traditions are very important them, ruled by Saturn this sign is on the conservative side. Trust is essential here.

Hi…thank you for this informative post on Capricorn. However, I want to understand in what way these folks are harbingers of change when they are so old-school and conservative in their mindset.
Hello Heena,
That’s a great question. I’m a Capricorn and resonate with this article in some ways. Its not in dept and Capricorn placement at time of birth is important to getting the big picture. With that said: As for myself as a Capricorn, I can appear to be stuck in my ways but times are changing and tradition can be important to me, however, with the changing times, I’m an avid learner and need to know everything about everything that affects me. So when (change) comes into the picture such as new system or new something is imposed on me, I make it my business to learn everything I need to know to understand the very big picture, I use my knowledge and instincts to decide if the information has value, if it makes sense and if and how it benefits everyone before I accept it, incorporate it and share it or teach it. Balance is KEY in my world. Things must make sense before I accept it.
So, in other words, sometimes I appear rigid and skeptical, but behind the screen I’m working on understanding new information before I accept it. (this people don’t see)
I can’t say if this is true for all Capricorn’s but its certainly true for me. I do apologize for the long answer but that’s another thing about me. I want people to have the big picture.
