Humans are social beings. We were born with an innate need to be around other people. From time to time, you need the company of new people with new ideas. This is the story of the eleventh house in the natal chart. The eleventh house in astrology is the house of friends and groups you belong to. It is based on an intellectual connection and the power of community.
It’s also important to help those who are less fortunate then us. The eleventh house is also about humanitarianism and social improvement.
The traditional name of the eleventh house in astrology is the House of Hopes and Wishes. Sounds strange, right? Let’s take a closer look at this house of the birth chart.
What is the 11th house in astrology?
The eleventh house is located in the upper hemisphere of the natal chart. All six houses in this part of the chart wheel are about your relationship with others. They are not about you as an individual person anymore. The eleventh house in the natal chart reveals your attitude towards society and how you fit in.
To start with, the eleventh house in the natal chart is about groups and friends. It represents your peers. The sign on the cusp shows what kind of people your social circle consist of. Someone with Capricorn here might be involved with organizations related to business—and with Saturnian energy in the eleventh house they might have a hard time fitting in, especially when young (Saturn brings delays and restrictions wherever it appears).
Besides friends, the eleventh house is also the house of hopes and wishes. It represents everything that comes into your life—including even money. Opinions are mixed on which house shows the income you make from your career. Most astrologers consider the eleventh house to show all wealth that comes into your life, not just your salary.

You need to understand the sign Aquarius to get a broader idea of the eleventh house, especially it’s relationship with society.
Aquarius is an air sign, which means that it lives life on an intellectual, without too much emotion. The eleventh house in astrology is the house of emotionless friendships—where you find the other person interesting and help them out if you can but you don’t really care. Close friendship, where there is an emotional bound between you are part of the seventh house in astrology.
Aquarius is also the sign of individuality and uniqueness. Sounds strange, right? But if you think about it, humans are simply wired for connection. And we enjoy the most the company of people who are like us. If you are as original as an Aquarius, it’s hard to fit in and connect to everyone. This is when a group of like-minded individuals comes in, friends we choose based on shared interests.
The ruler of Aquarius is Uranus, hence it is the natural ruler of the eleventh house in astrology, too. However, before the discovery of Uranus (which happened only in 1781), Saturn was considered to be the ruler of the Water Bearer.
The eleventh house is one of the succulent houses in the natal chart. By element, the eleventh house is an air house. Air houses teach us about communication and relating to others.
5th vs. 11th House in the Natal Chart: The Love You Give and Receive
When you are already established in life, it’s time to give back and help those who are just starting out. Following the tenth house of career, which house also represents the highest you get in life, the eleventh house in the natal chart shows your approach to society. It’s about going beyond your ego.
The eleventh house in astrology governs all organizations and societies. Think about yacht clubs, clubs of engineers, club of left-handed puppy lovers. Anything goes here. The point is here that these groups are woven around common interests.
Through groups, you meet a lot of like-minded people you can bounce off ideas each other. Many times connections made through similar interests benefit you in many ways. You get access to new information, meet people who can advance your career or who you can team up with for a new venture.
As you will see later, the eleventh house in astrology is the house of charity work. An emphasized eleventh house in the natal chart makes you want to help humanity on a global scale.
Hopes and Wishes of the Eleventh House in Astrology
It might sound strange why is the eleventh house traditionally referred to as the House of Hopes and Wishes. This house governs your goals and dreams, what you hope will come true one day.
This house describes everything that comes into your life. But often, the best things come through other people.
No Prejudices
Aquarius is known as a sign which accepts all as they are. It doesn’t matter if you are rich, poor, what’s your gender or color of skin. Aquarius welcomes everyone.
The eleventh house is about finding the common denominator, what connects us instead of pointing out the differences. You make friends because you like the other person’s point of view and you share similar ideas.
An intellectual connection is the most important here. Every astrologer worth their salt knows that Aquarius is a very open-minded sign. If you have some planets in the eleventh house, you are probably an open-minded and tolerant person, too.
Strength in the Numbers
We all know that connection and finding your tribe is important for human beings. We were simply not cut out for living isolated (however, if you are a twelfth house person, this is definitely easier for you, and it’s even a need to spend time in solitude).
Being alone makes you vulnerable, and besides this, you get much further of you take others along with you on your journey.
The eleventh house is about becoming part of something bigger than us. The difference between the eleventh and the twelfth house is that in the eleventh you do so on an intellectual, while in the twelfth house on a spiritual level.
Still, Aquarius is about being unique and individualistic. However, this makes you vulnerable and lonely, so it’s a natural need to find a group of like-minded individuals. This is where the story of the eleventh house comes in. Aquarius is also aware of the undescribable power that comes from being part of a community.
If you have many placements in the eleventh house in your chart, there are big chances that you will grow into someone influential and well-known in your community. These placements tend to come to the surface, you can’t really keep them secret.
Aquarius, the Sign of Humanitarianism
The eleventh house in the natal chart is attributed to charity and causes, Volunteering, giving money and time to those in need are all eleventh-house matters in astrology. It shows what you gift to the world, and also what the world gives back to you.
What you give, comes back to you. This house shows what comes to you and into your life. In this sense, it presents material gain, but there is much more to it. It helps you get on every level. Sometimes this gain is actually through friends and acquaintances. Income in the eleventh house often comes through a career.
very interesting…..I thought the 12th house was the house of charity & giving, though? No?
Yeah I can see how that would be kinda confusing. The way I interpret it is both are but the 11th is more cerebral and from sharing ideas to make improvements. The 12th is more from the heart, making sacrifices and compassion.
Beautifully expressed. And you can see how doing the eleventh house well would lead to the framework needed to give freely in the twelfth 🙏
This was a very interesting article. My North node is in Capricorn ♑️ In the 11th house. It all makes sense. I’ve been fighting this part of myself for years. This is a very difficult journey for me growing into my north node, but believe you me I’m going to get there. Adulting 101!
This article is so helpful! It has brought so much clarity and direction. Thank you!
“Just read the article about the eleventh house and it left me thinking about myself; because throughout my whole life, somehow I got involved with others in need!”
“Yet, I keep my distance afterward and this part seems awkward to those!
Got 5 personal planets in the eleventh house in 1 sign.”
My 11th house has both Scorpio and Sag with my NN in Sag and Saturn in Scorpio (hey, you know what generation I am now! 😉). I have lately been contemplating if I have truly gone on the path that leads to my NN with the hope that I have learned some of the lessons I need to in this life. I am in a field which engenders many of the best aspects of the 11th house (Midheaven in Libra helps here). But even since childhood the voice in my head says “have you really done enough?” (Not in the sense of fame, accomplishment, or that ilk…. But have I managed to address my karma in these relationships in my life?). I am not expecting an answer here…just musing. My end is so much closer than my beginning (just a realistic assessment due to age, not anything immediate 😉).
